Love From Lucy
“Lucy was born with half a heart and following several surgeries as a baby, had a heart transplant at 6 years old. She was beautiful, courageous, inspirational and selfless and met everything that was thrown at her during her life head on. No matter how she felt, she would put others first. She was caring, clever and wickedly funny!
Lucy felt unwell and was hospitalised on 23 December 2020 and diagnosed with pneumonia. Within a week Lucy became paraplegic and was diagnosed with Post-Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder (PTLD), a cancer caused by the anti-rejection drugs she took all her life for her ‘new engine’, as Lucy herself called her new heart.
Lucy fought hard but when it became clear that she was not going to win her battle, she started speaking with her family about setting up a charity, which she named herself. Lucy passed away, peacefully, with her loving family around her, aged just 21 on 28 March 2021, only 88 days after her devastating diagnosis.
‘Love from Lucy’ will support patients up to the age of 21 who have had a heart, liver, lung, kidney, pancreas or multi solid organ transplant and unfortunately find themselves to have developed the same PTLD cancer. We aim to help make their stay in hospital easier for them to cope with by providing things they may need.
