Initial Variety Trialing
Step 1 : Sowing The Seeds
The Seeds are sown in order onto specially prepared benches.
Each Seed Line is individually marked – this means that we can trace each seed back to the day it was crossed.
Step 2 : Bench Testing The Seeds
A team of 5 people will constantly monitor the Seedlings throughout the Spring.
From May to July a Selection Panel will mark the seedlings.
The Best Varieties will go onto the next stage of testing – the ones that are not quite good enough will be thrown away.
In 2003 we Bench tested 12,000 seedlings and selected 1600 to go onto the next stage – approx 87% were discarded.
